Garage conversions are a great solution to increase space and potentially value to your property. Plenty of garages aren’t utilised as purposeful spaces, and so a garage conversion can be a way to reclaim space and put it to more efficient use. Garage conversions can add living or utility rooms, a bedroom, home office or bathroom, or expand a kitchen. Most garage conversions will not require planning permission so long as you don’t intend on extending the structure of your home, however when thinking about a garage conversion it is critical to discuss with your Local Authority, as some limits can apply, for example on the amount of off-road parking spaces in an area. The garage conversion will also need to conform to building regulations on drainage, insulation, damp proofing, amongst other things.

When carrying out your garage conversion, have a structural survey done on the pre-existing garage in order to ascertain the amount of work that will need to be done. This will determine the best way to carry out the conversion. The walls of your existing garage will typically need improving from a single skin design to a cavity wall. Flooring will most likely require raising to meet the level of your home. Roofs will require either updating or completely altering to a tiled pitch roof style. The pre-existing garage door will generally be infilled with a new brick wall and have a window installed. The new room will require insulating to the standard of habitable rooms.

Minehead is a seaside town and civil parish in the English county of Somerset. It sits on the south shore of the Bristol Channel, approximately 21 miles (34 kilometres) north-west of the county town of Taunton, 12 miles (19 km) from the border with the county of Devon and in proximity of the Exmoor National Park. According to the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11981, meaning that it is the most populous town in the West Somerset local government district. There is indication of human occupation in the region since the Bronze and Iron Ages. There was a small port at Minehead by 1380, which became a primary trading centre during the course of the medieval period. Most trade transferred to more substantial ports through the 20th century, but pleasure steamers did call at the port. A marked increase in building during the early years of the 20th century produced the large main shopping avenue and adjoining roads with Edwardian-style architecture. There are a range of schools and religious, cultural and sporting facilities including sailing and wind surfing and golf. A popular ancient local custom involves the Hobby Horse, which takes to the streets for four days on the eve of the very first of May each year, with accompanying musician and performers and rival horses. The town is the starting point of the South West Coast Path National Trail, which is the country’s longest long-distance countryside hiking path. The Minehead Railway was opened in 1874 and closed in 1971, but it has subsequently been reopened as the West Somerset Train. For all of your home renovations, make sure to identify respected specialists in Minehead to make certain of quality.
